E4od/abs woes!!!

My 94 4wd F150 w/302/E40d, showed an ABS light a couple months ago but ran fine. This truck is rarely on the road....more for pulling my little car hauler (40 Ford 2dr). Yesterday, the speedo was inoperative and the transmission went into "Fail-safe" mode.

Had to replace a programmable speedo head a couple years back, took a break-away box to pinpoint the problem. Transmission was rebuilt under extended warranty. No issues up until yesterday.

I picked up a speed sensor at a local Flaps.....but can't seem to locate anyplace on the trans/transfer case where a speed sensor is positioned. Was told that some models used the ABS sensor in the diff for the speed signal as well as the ABS.

Before I go to my local Ford parts to pick up the diff mounted sensor I sure like some info as to whether I'm headed in the right direction? Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Dave

Does you speedo show the mileage? if it doesnt, you blew a fuse, common problem with these.. i want to say its fuse 18 or 8 i forget.. if your speed sensor was bad, it would act as if it was in neutral. falling into neutral and such, thats what mine did.. check your fuses first!

If you do need a speed sensor, its right on top of the rear diff, hard to miss.. when or if you go to replace it, make sure you spray around the sensor with Liquid wrench (like PB Blaster) and TWIST the sensor first, if you just yank on it, your most likely going to break it then your screwed

I ran into trouble replacing the VSS, you can read about it here if you like: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...g-the-vss.html

If you don't get it out right it can be a mess. That is probably your cheapest solution, if the ABS light is still on after you replace it then it might be the PSOM or the ABS unit itself. The PSOM will be the cheaper of those two.

I've checked the fuses, cab and engine bay...the odometer part of the speedo assembly is still working.....just the speedo and the transmission aren't getting any signal from the VSS and the transmission is banging up and down the gears.

The programable speedo head was changed shortly after I aquired the truck (used). Seems my local Ford dealer tried to reprogram the speedo for a tire diameter change and exceeded the number of changes allowed electronically. Haven't had any issues for the past 20K until yesterday. Hopefully, a speed sensor change will correct the current problem. I'll exercise caution during the change-out!

Thanks for your quick responses.

does it over rev to the next gear?

my speed sensor was going in and out.. would act like its in neutral for a second, rev up then BANG into the next gear.. make sure all your grounds are good, and double check the connrction on the VSS.. if all else fails, change it..

The over-revving in 1st, 2nd,3rd gears and the accompaning "bang" is typical of the "fail-safe" mode I experienced when my "programable speedo head" was faulty. No other way to put it....the shifts were violent. The dealership rebuilt the transmission and added the latest bandaids and the problem, which had always been intermittant, was still present. After 40 days in their shop (not all at one time) they finally put on a breakaway box and captured the code that told them it was the programable speedo head. Fortunately, I had an extended warranty which covered the lion's share of the repair.

The truck is used only occassionally and a couple months ago I noticed I had an ABS light on the dash. I wasn't that concerned due to the rare times it's on the road. However, yesterday it was back to it's old tricks and unlike the earlier problem, the speedo was inoperative, although the odometer functioned normally.

The thought of giving it back to the dealership for more OJT hanging on new expensive, unnecessary parts goes against my grain. Hopefully, I can pop in a new speed sensor and remedy the issue.

Thanks again for your responses.

Hey man, when it acted up, was it goin down the road or just moving around the parking lot? The reason I ask is: when I take my daughter to school in the morning (yes it's cold, around 30 degrees, and not warmed up much) anyway, I'm parked on a big hill and after I turn around and then go to take off at the bottom of the hill it seems like it revs up a little more than it should before I can take off?

It does do better after it warms up, but the truck does have 215,000 miles on it and never had any trans work or to my knowledge a VSS/ABS sensor on it? I bought it with 213,000 on it from the original owner. It does have an E4OD in it with a 351W. It also has the WRONG size tires on it, and I do know from reading previous posts that tires can throw it off and maybe do other junk to it too? It has 3:55's in it with 29" tall tires on it. I am goin to change the gears to 4:11's as soon as I can find some. The trans shifts into 2nd around 10 to 15MPH? I'd love to make it hold 1st longer and shift harder too.

Thanks for any help!!
