Engine Block Heater?

There are 2 different styles of heaters for an engine. One called a tank heater connects to a block drain and to a heater hose. This device circulates engine coolant through the engine. Another called a block heater is installed in a freeze plug and heats coolant but has minimal circulation of coolant. You would want 2 of these, one on each side of the engine.

I have the factory block heater on my 98 Exp and it is on the rear most freeze plug on the drivers side. There is nothing on the passenger side. The few times I have used it, it keeps the block warm, but not as high as normal operating temperature. It keeps the block about as warm as the engine would get after driving about two miles on an extremely cold day.
