Where does the Throttle cable go?

Hello everyone in FTE!

I'm new here. My name is Sander. I live in The Hague, Netherlands. I'm 36 years old.

I recently bought this '51 F1 Flathead V8, which is a half-finished restoration and not very common here. I bought some stuff at LMC-truck to finish most of the project.

I fitted a new throttle-cable into the dash, there was none before, but where should the other end go? I think there is something missing on my accelerator link or carburator to fit it on.

It seems you guys in the USA customise so much, that there is not one thread, post or picture to be found on the internet about this stock carburator fitted Flathead of mine.

Many thanks in advance!

Welcome to FTE

You can view all sorts of illustrations, all you need is this:

The 1948/56 FORD TRUCK PARTS CATALOG is available on a CD from hipoparts.com / Also sold on ebay for a "Buy it Now" price which is around $20.00.

The CD is comprised of two volumes, one for Text, one for Illustrations.

Page 298 in the illustrations section shows the carb linkage and choke/throttle cable routings.

The carb itself is shown on page 288.

Hello Sander,

I looked in the books that Bill refered you to above but unfortunately none of the drawings show the throttle cable hook up. I had one in another truck, and it is a very simple installation. But without seeing it, I can not portray it to you.

Apparently there was a kit that was used with five pieces, but they appear to be very simple - a cable; bracket; clip; stop; and, a grommet.

I will write to a few members and see if someone can take a picture of the installation for you, and I will keep looking for a drawing for you.

Hang in there,
Julie

For the Holley 94 used on flatheads, the driver's side of the throttle shaft was extended beyond the throttle base and a crank arm with ball end was added. It included an arrangement to allow the foot throttle to speed the engine above the manual setting, all told there is a lever, spring, and cap. The car-model 94's didn't have this feature, so it's hard to find a picture of it. One of the best places to check is Vintage Speed, http://www.vintagespeed.com/. The hand throttle lever is shown in their on-line catalog. If your carb doesn't extend out for the lever, someone has replaced the carb somewhere along the way.

Here is a pic from my truck. You can see the cable comes over the top of the fuel pump and down to the middle of the base of the carb on the driver side.

Hello again Sander!

That's a great photo from GEARHEAD!

I was at C&G Ford Parts today and they gad a new (possibly rebuilt) carburetor on the shelf withthe linkage you need on it. If your carburetor does not have this lincage on it, it is probably a carburetor off a car engine.

Here are some close up pictures they took for me - great guys up at C&G Ford Parts:

Please disregard the labels on the pictures. Where it says front of carb, that is actually the back. The cable is run through the hole from back to front.

Best wishes,
Julie!

Thanks to you all! You've been of great help. I'm definitely missing something off the carb! Only the pin with the flatened end sticks out: the lever, washer, even the part where the outer cable is attached is gone!

I knew something was not right, I didn't know what it was!

It will be hard to find the missing parts here in Holland without buying a whole carb, or even a whole truck! :-)

The pictures in my galery show the wrong side of the carburator, after work I will try to post a picture of the left side!

Thanks again!

The hand throttle isn't that useful, I wouldn't get too excited about it. Vintage Speed seems to have all the parts, but replacing the throttle shaft with the correct piece is no fun.

Ross is right, the only thing it's really useful for is if you work on a farm and need the truck to run at a constant slow speed while someone walks along side. I definetly wouldn't try to use it as a cruise control since it does not disengage when you hit the brakes. It could prove to be more dangerous than it's worth.

Forty or more years ago we used to use the throttle to increase rpms when it was cold out to warm up the engine when loading. Some guys would use the choke for this and then forget to push it in later. Sorry for the reminessing ! ! ! The 51 has not seen nothern winters in almost 30 years. LOL

Well maybe, guys. And considering the danger of engaging it while dirving, the tempting quasi cruise control, I can agree.

But for someone in another country with a rare treasure like this, who might just possibly be as **** as I am about having "all options functional" I can certainly understand. It adds to the dash look and you don't want cables just dangling out in your engine compartment.

On my 55, I found the Hand Throttle very useful during tune ups where I had to maintain a higher rpm for certan tune up tests and functions. I also found it useful when the battery got low and I wanted to increase rpm to provide more generator out put while sitting.

If your throttle plate shaft does extend out the other side, it means you really do have a truck carburetor (the car carbs it didn't do that) so for originality sake, that's better if you are into that. And another member gave you a source to buy the parts if you want to hook it up. So, you should be all set. I'd hook it up if it were mine!

To each there own - right?

Good luck Sander
Julie
