Question Intercooler

I just lost an intercooler. It started taking coolent and putting it in the motor. We were losing coolent and getting white smoke out the tail pipe.

It cost $2300.00 to fix. I ask them to save the parts but they some how got thrown away.

They said it was caused by using Rotels new oil and a Wix filter.

It was on my 2005 6.0L

Can I have a little input from you all..

Thanks

Are you refering to an egr or oil cooler?? I don't see how an intercooler can give those symptoms and the oil and/or filter has nothing to do with the intercooler. Did I read something wrong??

If its your EGR Cooler it probably was caused by the Oil Cooler failure due to casting sand build up inside the Oil Cooler. When this happens the plugged Oil Cooler restricts the flow of coolant to the EGR Cooler and causes what little amount of coolant it lets by to boil inside the EGR Cooler which leads to its failure. This is most likely your case, so if the Mechanic didn't change the Oil Cooler you will keep having EGR Cooler issues. The problem is some dealers don't have a qualified tech so you need to go in with good information and tell them whats wrong with your truck....nicely. After they fix it install a Coolant bypass filter; it will filter out the casting sand and will help prevent future problems. By the way I use Rotella's new 5w-40 synthetic oil and so do a lot of other members on this site... its a very good oil.

I have heard that the factory oil filter has a patien. that Wix and others use smaller size filters or weaker glues in the filter to get out of paying royalties. The filter breaks up and plugs up everything. It could mess up your EGR cooler but I do not see how it would let coolant into your intercooler.

You were right it was the EGR cooler. Sorry I haven't been home enought to look at the paper work. If you can give me in insite to this problem that would be great..

I don't believe that oil and oil filter caused this type of problem. I would not use the Wix filter for reasons other than that. Rotella happens to be a very good oil and the oil filter if malfuctioning would more than likely cause engine or injector damage. A coolant filter could possibly help prevent egr/oil cooler problems in the future.

EGR Coolers are not very uncommon replacements for our trucks. The sand casting from when the engine block was made sometime get left in the cooling system and coolant cause the EGR Coolers to clog and blow (overheat)

A coolant filter will help with this issue as 69cj said above
