I tow cars for a dealer occsionally (little extra hell money)
My 351M does OK, it has about 94,000 original miles, but did the 81 351M timing chains have the same setup as the 72 & up 400s , that is the cam was retarded 8 degrees ?
Seems I could pick up an extra 20 horsepower for very cheap, so would a 71 timing chain give it a bit more zing ? Id like a lttle more power on the steep hills we have here.
The factory retarded cam legend is a hit and miss thing. I've never found any information regarding specific years affected by this malady. In fact what I HAVE read about this is that it was with the earlier versions of the engine.
The only way you can really know that it's right is to just change the cam and put in a new timing chain straight up.
If the engine has strong compression and uses no oil, the Comp 252H or if you have stock exhaust, the 255DEH would be good choices. They will raise the cylinder pressure considerably, so if it is using even a little oil, the added cylinder pressure will cause it to PUMP oil.
I bought a performance timing chain for my 351M, played with the timing, even bought a new waterpump while I had it off.
I had it loaded with firewood today and it did make a difference !
Mustang: it's an 81, just about the last of the line.
