Was driving to work last Wed and running right along when the RPMs started to increase without me moving the pedal. I let up and it started to shut down and the check engine light came on. As I coasted over to the shoulder I pushed in the clutch and the RPMs started coming back up and the check engine light went away. I had about 4 more miles left so I kept driving. Made it to work and replaced the CPS. Had original black CPS with 216,000 miles. Replaced it with the gray one and drove home without any problems. Driving to work today, I noticed the throttle response is much more sensitive and seemed like it tried to take off on me again without moving the pedal. It's getting colder here now, but I'm not sure if that could be a factor. Any ideas on things I should check out? Is there a way to make sure the throttle position sensor is working correctly? I haven't had the check engine light come on any more, and don't have a scanner so I'm not sure what code it threw. Any ideas?
I would just keep a close eye on it to see if the problem replicates itself again. Then I would address the problem and see if the TPS or CPS needs changing. Keep a close note on the temps and conditions when it acts up.
My truck did the same thing a couple of weeks ago. I just recently traded my 1996 super cab for it and have been working out the bugs. I discovered my problem was low oil. I don't know why, but I checked the oil the next day and discovered that this new PSD uses a ridiculous amount of oil. Also discovered that it had the typical oil leak at the dipstick tube, except the nut on the bulkhead had completely come off. As a result I was nearly a gallon low on oil in less than 200-300 miles. I topped off the oil and fixed the leak and no more problems. Hope that helps.
Oil level is good, right where it should be. I'm thinking it was more or less an adjustment for my right foot than anything else. I'll monitor it and report back if it happens again.
