Today, after a short ride down a road with some water-filled holes, I hit the interstate and was amazed to find my speedo reading over 100mph..I was not even going the speed limit and was being passed by almost everyone. When I stopped at the exit, it read 50 MPH. I had to go another 50 miles or so and now it reads 34mph with the key off and a few mph higher when I turn on the key. I sure will appreciate any help or suggestions I can get. Any Techs out there..Please
I have an early 06 and had the same problem. They told me that ford had a bad batch of instrument clusters. The whole cluster will have to be replaced, miles, hours and such. I had to wait till fmc recieved it then they call you for your miles and hours and program the new one. A couple of days later the dealer gets it and installs it. I had the same symptoms as you and was covered under warranty. Hopefully you still have warranty. good luck
Does this sound right? Stuck/bouncing Speedo and/or Tach, 2006 Trucks Built Before 1-26-06:
Before diagnosing the instrument cluster for this issue, first check for codes stored in the ABS module or engine computer. If there are no relivent codes, check the vehicle speed input to the cluster while stopped. If the input and the displayed speed do not match, drive the vehicle and monitor the speedometer at 0, 20, 40 and 60 MPH as indicated on the scan tool. If the speedometer is off by more than 5 MPH, replace the cluster. If the speedometer display matches the sensor input, diagnose the ABS rear axle speed sensor and wiring, and the ABS module wiring. For tachomater concerns, check the RPM signal in the engine computer against the tach reading at 1000 and 2000 RPM. If the display is more than 250 RPM off, replace the cluster. I don't imagine ford would pay but you could ask the dealer how much to perform TSB 06-7-4. That way they know they are dealing with someone who knows what is happening with their truck and you wont get burnt.
My truck has done this twice now, about a year apart. Both times were when I was driving in mud/snow slush and it was cold. But I don't know if that is a factor.
Anyway, what happens, the speedo does not go to zero when you stop and shut down. The pointer hangs at some speed. This most recent time mine hung at 55 mph. On the next start, it shows an extra 55 mph added to your actual speed. Just as described by the OP.
Both times mine has corrected itself over the span of a couple of days and a half dozen or so start/shutdown cycles. Since it is always corrected by the time I get home I have not taken it to the dealer. It's rare enough that I'm not sure if I will bother with it.
Thanks for the TSB info. That will be helpful if I decide to pursue a fix.
Bill, Thanks for the encouraging words. The conditions you described are the same as mine.. I think I will give it a while to see if it self-corrects too...
If it doesn't self correct and you do have to buy a new instrument cluster, they aren't very hard to take out. Mine did this also and a new instrument cluster solved the problem. Mine was under warrenty though.
OK, Thanks. I suspect that in order for the 100000 mile engine warranty to remain in effect, a dealer would have to somehow certify it. So far it is down to 14 mph when I stop, so I am optimistic !!
It is my understanding that the tech has to download some info from the old cluster, and upload to the new. And that it is therefore not a DIY job. I'm too lazy to search for it, but I think you will find a thread from someone who made the mistake of swapping his cluster with one from another truck.
UPDATE:
It seems to have corrected itself. Each time I turned off the engine, the speedo needle would drop a little lower until it finally reached zero. The original problem occured after I drove through some water holes while leaving my deer lease. They weren't real deep and had a hard bottom, but I probably hit them fast enough for water to spray up. Today, I drove through the same places, but very slowly with no problems..So, if this should happen to you, give it a little time and it may self-correct.
Thanks for all of your input!
Not to rain on your party, but mine would act like yours then you would hop in the truck and for 2-3 weeks would run perfect then act up again. This was a frustrating cycle until i had time to drop it off at the dealer for the new cluster. Not saying that yours didnt fix itself, but the consensus that i have read is that if its an 06 with an instrument cluster issue, it will have to be replaced. I hope yours proves me wrong though. Bpounds, didnt think about not being able to load up the info from the old one to the new one. Nice reminder!
