I don't have an '86 F-350 (assume this is what you're talking about)
My dash controls are a little different than yours, but I'd have to assume they function pretty much the same.

Are you saying the blower motor (fan) is not working?
Do you have all fan speeds?
The motor itself should be mounted in the plastic plenum.

My truck has a vacuum operated "outside air-heat" control.
This one lever doesn't feel like it's doing anything because it's only controlling a vacuum port. But I checked this weekend and after patching a cracked vacuum line it works fine.

Perhaps the blend door hinge has broken?
That's not uncommon.

I'd first check the fuses, then check for power at the motor plug.

Going to look at the schematic for an '86.

There is a wire-wound resistor in the plenum that acts as a speed control for mine. These commonly burn out, but usually leave you with high speed. (that's why I asked)

Also check the blower resistor which is outside of the plenum on your truck. These sometimes need replaced and an easy do it your self in a few minutes.

OK,

So I'm looking @ the schematic in my Haynes manual.
It says fuse #15 should be 30A.

The resistor is 4 wire for a truck w/ A/C, and 3 wire for one without.
Do you see a plug with a red, or pink, board screwed into the engine bay side of your plenum?

I just had to replace my blower motor, It is located under the hood on the pass side. Mine was dragging and blowing fuses. Check to see if you have power and ground to the motor, if not check the 30 a fuse. The temp cable on mine is broken too, it moves the lever to adjust temp just towards the centr of the firewall near the blower motor. I have just been setting the temp were I want it under the hood and dealing without adjusting from the cab
