well i have a sterling 10.5 and I replaced the seal cause it was leaking and at the time i did not know what axle it was and what gear oil to put in it. So i come to find out now that it says to use synth. oil wich i did not use, i put in valvoline 75w 90 my question is will it mess the diff. up? i dont tow anything with my truck or drive it hard. thanks
Man, I have no idea. The NAPA guy suggested the wrong stuff to me and I put it in, drove around for a couple of days without any problems and changed it again (which is a whole other story--broken bolts were invovled!). Someone will answer shortly.
Most likely not. I think the synthetics are more temperature stable. I would change it out as soon as possible though, to avoid any potential for problems later.
Don't quote me on this, but I believe Ford was using 75W90 dino oil to begin with in the Sterlings. They changed later to full synthetic 75w140 because they had a high rate of warranty claims. I BELIEVE it was about the front pinion bearing, being too small for the design.
That front pinion bearing is only really loaded when coasting. So, the failures were not related to heavy loads. Might also explain why the gassers like to keep the revs up on deceleration for the manual trannies, but I'm really stretching the "educated guess" on that one.
I would change it eventually, and definitely keep an ear out for any whining on deceleration or any other time, for that matter.
