It probably has been asked before, but I didn't see it in my search. Would a guy be better off just buying whole axle assemblies from the yard to swap out gears? My axles have 112k I could have the truck tied up for a few days having gears done somewhere and still have 112k axles or I could get low mileage axles at about the same cost as the swap with factory Ford gears and swap at my leisure? Unless gear swaps are less money than I think, I could do the complete axle swap in the $1200 range out right without even considering selling the old ones.
In a 4wd figure about $2000 for a gear change. If you know people, a 2wd can be done for less than $600.
Shop cost is really going to be a deciding factor in price. For you axle, I would have it regeared and new bearing/seals installed. The gear set will be around $200, the install kit another $100 (bearings, seals, shims) and then the shop cost of $200-800. For a drive line shop, it should only take them a few hours to a rear axle and are better priced than a dealer or general mechanic.
I can easily swap axles, but I don't do gears and If that is what it would likely cost to have someone do so I'd save a boat load buying, swapping the complete axle assemby myself
I just re-geared my Superduty, bought new R&P both ends, new limited slip diffs front and rear, with install kits, labor, gear lube, and install cost me around $2700. Purchased everything except the gears from Randy's Ring and Pinion.
Although I went plowing today for the first time since I re-geared about the truck is a completely different truck now. Works awesome.
