I'm looking to get an F series truck for towing and in general screwing around, I had a 1993 F150 XLT 4X4 Extended cab with the 5.0L and a 4 speed auto. that I sold about a year ago, It seamed that the trans seemed to be quick to wear out "After 120,000 Miles, the trans would shift hard into Reverse. I would like to use my next truck as a daily driver and to haul around 9,000 pounds. Anyways I was wondering if anyone had a great experiance with a particular year and model.
I had a 351 250 and it pulled ok with 4.10 axle ratio but fuel mileage was terrible (6 to 7 mpg) when towing. Now I'm using an old 6.9 diesel it tows much better (not great) and I get 13 to 14 mpg towing 18 empty. Around 7500 lbs fifth wheel. 9000 lbs is a lot of weight and it's asking a lot out of a 351 and too much from an auto tranny in these years. Just my opinion
What year did the 7.3L Diesel start into production? What is the usual life expectancy for a Power Stroke engine ? And was there ever an option for a manual tranny , 4X4, crew cab?
