Speedometer corection

Does anyone know what i need to do to my buddies 92 F-150, with a 5.0 auto 2x4, to get it to read right when we swap in 3.73s?

On my 89 Mustang GT it was a certain speedo gear that went into the tranny. On my 2000 mustang i just changed the gear ratio in my hand held tuner. So what do i do for his truck? Id almost be willing to say its the plastic little gear, but i really am unsure. Its the E4OD tranny i think

I think you have to change the gear. Do a web search for speedometer gears. There is a really good one out there but I can't remember which one it is. I think it is with one of the transmission parts suppliers like maybe TCI. Also a local tramsmission shop should be able to look it up and supply you with the proper gear.

If the truck has a speedo drive cable coming off the tail of the tranny then you need to change the speedo drive gear just like your Stang. If there is only electrical wires on the tranny you have to recalibrate the psom, do a search for the procedure.

Is there a chart of some sort that breaks down what speedo drive gear i need for certain tire heights and gear ratios?

didn't the 92 read the speed from the rear axel speed sensor? m budys 95 does... have a look and see if the tranny has a spedo gear/cable, I think it should be near the back of the tranny.
If it's driven off of the rear axel speed sensor( its a 2 or 3 wire plug at the top of the pumpkin near the yolk) than I think you can reprogram the computer to account for gear change.
keep in mind that even the older trucks like mine have a speed sensor at the axle... but it's for my abs. I have it and a cable driven off of my tranny.

The 1992 F150 has an electronic odometer that reads off of the rear axle and when changing the differential ratio it isnt necessary to recalibrate the speedo or odometer. It is only necessary when changing tire sizes.

The PSOM/speedo/odometer is electrically run off of the RABS sensor in the rear axle and apparently the ring gear change wouldnt effect the PSOM.

your right... it's tire changes that require recalabration not gear changes...my bad...wasn't thinking

This is correct. If the truck has the sensor on top of the rear end that is used for rear ABS and for the VSS then changing gears doesn't matter only tire size.

I think 87-91 still had the gear type speedometer cable, but 92-96 doesn't. You may want to look and see if there is a speedo cable or not just to make sure.
