Hi guys
I just got my 60 F350 with an 223 Inline to idle properly but when its idling there is alot of whitish smoke that is coming out of the tailpipe and it leaks from out of the manifold. (It was NOT thick and billowy) I'm pretty sure that I need new manifold gaskets. But does this color and amount of smoke mean that my mixture is too thick?
Hmmmm, well no, if you are running too rich fuel wise, your smoke would be black. If it's gray that usually means you are burning oil. If it's white (not light gray but white) that probably means you have a coolant leak that you are flashing into steam. Does the "smoke" hang around, or does it seem to vanish?
Try it on a really cold morning and see if it acts more like steam than smoke. If it "vanishes" then it's steam and you've got some coolant leak problems. You will be able to smell the coolant if that's what it is as well.
Thanks!
The smoke seemed to hang around. I dont think it was a coolant leak cause I couldn't smell any coolant and it was a pretty cold day today when i was idling it and the smoke just hung around under the hood.
Thanks!

You are probably burning oil then. That could be a few things. But if it's coming out the tail pipe too, then it's internal and not just an oil leak dripping on the manifold. I'd just drive it. But just in case, check your oil dipstick once every couple of drives and check for milky white sediment in it.
