my friend has a 1974 f-250 ford truck
he just rebuilt the engine it has the the 390 in it
and after he put it all back together again it now cranks in the run position
and we are both stumped
he replaced the starter the solenoid and even tried the switch but still cranks when turned to run
tryin to get this truck down the road
so any help you can give us would be greatly appreciated
like a wiring diagram would be awesome or just some tips maybeweve both just over looked something who knows???
thank you very much
Did he try the switch with the key in it, or the actual switch behind key? Another possibility, the starter solenoid is hooked up backwards? If you have points, you have two positions. The S is for the switched 12V, the I gives 12V to the ignition? S on the I, and I on the S? I have never tried hooking them up backwards, but mebbe that is something to check? Did he do any fooling with the wires? Clean anything up while the motor was out, re-work anything? Was there anything new installed on the truck while it was down? Does it crank when you turn the key on immediately, or when you click it over to start then let it settle back to run? Has the truck ran at all since the motor was re-installed, even with the starter still trying to crank? What happens when you jump the starter solenoid without the wire hooked to it? Measure the
yeah i will definatly look into if the solenoid is backwards it might be
ok when i put the key into the switch as soon as i turn to the "run" position before reaching "start" position the engine cranks and besides a new fuel pump, starter, and a battery nothing else has been tampered with yes the truck has fired it sounded awesome then the starter blewup because it never diengaged and we had to replace the starter and flywheel
well just got done switchin wires on the solenoid and i either had crank in run
or nothing at all depending on where the wires are hooked up to
anyother sugestions thank you so much for your help guys
Try another solenoid maybe. My starter was sticking in the run position after I put a new starter in it. I replaced the solenoid and it still would stick. One time it was sticking with the new solenoid (two days after I put the new one on) so I wrapped on it with a wrench and it stopped. I replaced the solenoid for a second time and now she's golden.
yeah i just put a new solenoid in it yesterday
ill try smakin it with a hammer???
but what i really need is a wiring diagram or atleast where the wires are supposed to be connected the book he has is a chilton and they never have crap for wiring diagrams and the program i use at school doesnt go back that far
but thank you for your sugestions everyone keep em coming and hopefully i can get this thing to fire
what do you mean
im still really new with the electrical parts of a vehicle
what would i be looking
where should i check it
i have checked my switch it delivers power where its supposed to and i ripped apart my harness and traced the wires and they all look to be in the right spot
but the starter wants to engage in the run position
smakin the solenoid dint do anything btw
but thank you for the idea im willing to try anything
On the test light go to your local parts store and pick up one. they'r cheap. hook up alligator clip to any ground on engine like alternator bracket. Then on solenoid touch to battery side of solenoid light will come on. If yes light is on thats good. Sometimes might have to wiggle ground for good contact. Test to battery first make sure testlight is good. Then touch to back side of solenoid power wire to starter. Light should be off. If on your two smaller wires are possibly in wrong position like mentioned before or solenoid is damaged internal. On the two smaller wires touch and see if off with key off. If key on see which light up wire. the one that is off touch test light to and turn key all the way to start position and see if it comes on only when turned all the way. As soon as you let off key should go off. IF it doesn't I would think your solenoid is bad. but a ignition switch could be a problem also but another test procedure. Hope I got this correct but its close. haven't lost a solenoid in a long time since i went to better wires and upgraded my grounds all over truck. I think you will figure it out once you start to play with it. Good little starter tool for electrical.
I had this problem once. it was my neutral safety switch. I had pinched my wiring between my exhaust manifold and my transmission dipstick tube. might want to check that.
I had an 86 250 6.9 ltr. that did the same thing. I ended up having to drop the steering column and replace the box that connects the two rods on the column for my ignition. Good Luck.
I experienced the same senario with a '65 mustang, after i reinstalled a 289 ci & c4 auto. I failed to plug in the neutal safety switch, and the car did the same thing....as soon as i turned the key to "run" she started turning over. after a few hours of research with the ignition system, i seen the plug for the neutral safety switch, plugged it in, and the ignition switch functioned as it should, and for many years later.
having the same problem on an old chrysler im working on. havent figured it out yet but i know its not the starter or ignition switch or solenoid. I had a problem with sopme mice eating up some wires in and out of the car. all thwe wires in the engine area are fixed so there gotta be a wiring problem inside. could be the nuetral switch wire ill have to check. anyway, if you just need a temporary solution to get down the road heres what ive done. I just clipped the smaller wire runniong form the starter( not the positve bat. wire) I can then turn the key to run, then i touch the wires together just until the engines starts and then pull them back apart, it will then shut the starter back down while keeping the engine going. jesse
