Limited Slip Not Engaging
I have been complaining about the new tires I put on the truck only to find one of the reasons it has no traction on the ice was because the limited slip is not engaging.
When I first bought the truck it would chatter if you made a sharp turn from a stop. The mechanic threw some friction modifier in the diff. and it was better. A year later it started to chatter again and got to the point it would chatter just changing lanes. I took it in and got all the diff fluids changed. That was a year ago. I'm not sure if it has worked since then. I called the shop and asked if they put too much friction modifier in it, if it could cause it to not engage. He said "no, it is just a conditioner it will not cause it not to engage". Does that sound right? He said it was probably the clutch packs and it would be around $1000 to get them fixed?
Can too much friction modifier not allow the clutches to grab?? If so should I dump the fluid and start over?
If its the clutch packs it that something that can be done by someone who has never pulled apart a diff?
Thanks
