how loud would my 351 be if i run straight pipe from the cat? the cat is stock and huge and i wanted to make it louder and was wondering if i have to replace the cat too.
I have a 4.9L I6 with straight pipe behind the OEM catalytic converters exiting in the factory location; not too loud at all. It even seems to last longer up here in the salt ridden rust belt. I am very satisfied with this setup, and will probably never replace the muffler.
Yes, it won't be as loud as you were hoping. I have owned 2 351W powered trucks; a 1990 E150 van and a 1995 F150. Both had the exhaust cut off right after the second cat. You would never guess that that there was no muffler.
My F150 has a 18" section of flex pipe that points out the passenger side right after the cab. Its still very quiet. I contemplated putting an old Flowmaster muffler on that I have sitting in my garage, but it doesn't change the sound at all.
I have a 460 and when I went with a 3 inch cat back muffler I had them try running a 3 inch pipe right off the stock cat. and it was too friggun loud for me. I know a 460 is probably putting out more sound then a 351, but it is easy to try to see for yourself.
I have a 302 and when I got it, it had dual pipes after the two cats with no muffler and you could hardly hear the thing. I took off the second cat, which was the bigger one and put 3.5x20 inch tips on and it made quite a bit of difference. It has a real nice deep gurgle to it, but I am a teenager and am looking for more noise so sometime I am going to take off the other cat and run straight pipes, but I don't have emission testing so I don't have to worry about having a cat, which you might have to depending on where you live.
