Talking 85 Ranger

I have a 85 2.8 auto 2 wheel dr with a rod doing time with the radio(aka KNOCKING LIKE HELL)
what motor besides the 2 .8 will bolt up to the tranny
was doing a 302 for it but now i need to put that in my f 150 pouring oil out the rear main

The 2.9 and the 4.0 supposedly bolt right up. The 2.9 might be able to use your intake and thus avoid ECM, EFI, & wiring contortions...

The 2.9 and 4.0 will bolt up, but I would find a carbed 302 so you won't have to mess the efi. However, efi would be a benifit if you don't mind the xtra work that it would require over a carbed engine.

Wendell, would it be possible to use the intake from a 2.8 on a 2.9? I know they are different, but both are based on the Cologne from the 70's. It was just a thought.

No, the heads are different and the intake won't work. Stick with the 2.8l, the heads don't crack, and the lifters never tap. The bottom end will be at least as strong also. They had a few quirks, but all in all the 2.8l was a great motor!
