97 4x4 problems
4WD isn't working on my 97 XLT this year.
Most common reasons are the switch or the motor in the transfer case.
How do I check each one so I don't replace the wrong one first?
BTW... The fuzes are fine, both under hood & under dash.

I'd try at the easiest part first, the switch. I'd get a multi-meter and see if you're getting voltage in and out of the switch. If you have power in, but not out, I'd say the switch is the culprit. No power in, start tracing the circuit backwards. If you have power out, then the problem is downstream and I'd lean towards the motor. I'm not positive that's how the circuit functions, but just throwing a few thoughts out there. Anyone with more input?

I love this site! A HUGE Thanks to all who post here. 4WD was not working on the wifes 97 Expy. Not good news for me with 2-4 inches of new snow every other day and temps at -35. I really wasn't looking forward to rollin around under there at these temps. Thanks to a search on the topic here I saw a few guys say to disconnect the battery for a few minutes. All is working now. The transfer case actuator is real crappy looking, but it's looked like that for at least 4 years that I know of but worked fine. I will have one on hand for when the weather breaks, but till then she's all-wheel-diggin again thanks to your advice. Thanks again. Denny
