Hi my father inlaw has a 91 Ford f-350 460 2wd with an E4OD. It will not drive in drive you need to shift it into low and go up through the gears manualy. The trouble codes say overdrive switch is bad, that wouldn't be the switch on the dash would it? I am thinking cylinoid pack trouble. I had him check wires they seem to be fine. Any ideas I could give him would help he lives out in the middle of nowhere and does not have a lot of cash to through parts at it. Thank You
It's part of the MLPS. It DOES act as the neutral safety switch as well as telling the computer what gear the truck is in. If the truck thinks it's in first gear then it won't shift out first gear. The computer control a solenoid pack inside the trans. You CAN manually shift it from first to third gear. Fourth is controlled by the computer. When you put the selector in (D) it sends a signal to the computer saying that it's in drive. The computer then tells the transmission HOW and WHEN to shift. If the MLPS is bad, it won't shift correctly, or it won't shift at all.
