I just installed a new edelbrock aluminum manifold and a Holley 550 4 barrel vacuum secondary carberuator with electric choak. I can not get the motor to run at the proper RPM with it running smoothly. Can anyone let me know what the timing should be set at and what the low idle RPM should be? Thanks.
My first vote would be to set the screws at 1.25 as suggested then set the timing, then the idle(in gear if an auto with the E-brake on wheels chocked) 650rpm finally use a vacuum gauge to set the mixtures screws correctly. How to Use and Interpret a Vacuum Gauge
My 390 has a crappy Holley 600 smog carb. And the rich/lean screws are backwards compared to your normal Holley. It has a sticker on the side by each screw. When I first got the car it ran very lean. Then I noticed the mixture screws. Just something to look for. On my 600 I ended up 1/2 turn out each side.
Guys, Thanks for the advice i will try this tomorrow. I am a little new at this, when you say 8 tono more than 10 degrees, you are refering to 8 to 10 BTC correct? I would assume that the vacuum on the manifold should be around 10 to 22 PSI correct? Just FYI, the truck is a 4 speed manual.
Guys, one last question i just found out when this motor was rebuilt a camper/RV cam was installed would that change the timing? Any guesses on what it might be?
