well this morning when i drove to work, heard the truck kinda lightly "tinging" though to myself, wtf? on the way home a lunch... little louder... back to work after lunch, it wasnt tinging anymore, was a light constant banging noise, kept getting louder... on the way home it was rank loud... i was thinking holy ****, maybe it was a universal joint gone bad or something, sooo i get home, back on the driveway and GRIND...
yup, rear axle is toast...
guess its time for a new set of gears! maybe a locker? hmm
actually... does anyone have a 1 ton rear axle? maybe i should build up on of those?!
That`s too bad, sometimes that`s my kind of luck too.
I`ve got afew Ford 3/4 rear axles but I doubt you`d be happy with them, they`re geared for slow speed work and wouldn`t be too much fun in a daily driver.
I just changed my rear axle this summer on my crewcab. I do have another spare around out of a 75 F-250. It is a dana 60 and I am not sure what ratio it is off hand.
What ratio is yours.
A locker is nice. I had one for years and although I think it is better when stuck in mud, snow, etc. than a limited slip, you gotta be careful in glare ice.
There were about three occasions over a ten year period when I gave it a bit too much throttle and the locker locked both wheels up and in a nano second fishtailed so quickly, viciously and slid the vehicle out almost to a 180....that I'm not sure I would get a locker again.
It happened only, on 'surprise' glare ice that appeared almost out of nowhere, which happens sometimes.
A limited slip would of transferred power back and forth, mitigating any extreme fishtail, a locker will slide you out quickly and badly in this situation.
My locker was an automatic, low speed mechanism.
If I had a choice on what traction assist device I would get, it would be a locker that I could switch on and off. I think the ARB air locker is like that, but I'm not sure.
I've got a 2 F350 ton axles and a 3/4 ton axle. The 1 ton's are 4.10. I think the F250 axle is 3.55. All from '91-'91 trucks. PM me if interested. They're not doing me any good sitting here.
i think im gonna go big or go home lol thats kinda the way im leaning with this truck, i've always wanted to do a bigger lift and get some huge meats... so i might as well find a set of 1 ton axles and do it right!
Many people don`t realize how good a performer the 400 can be, check it out in the 335 Series- 5.8/351M, 6.6/400, 351 Cleveland forum: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum54/
I know you`ll be pleasantly surprised, I was.
i have a set of axels (4x4) pair from a 2002 f250 super duty (solid front, manual locking hubs, leaf sprung) and everything that was used to mount them, sway bars, steering box, pitman arm, steering assist shock? i believe it is, tow hooks, and the alluminum rims that fit with tires that hold air....also hubcaps are available, $1200 and they're yours
$900 without the wheels

It`s against FTE policy to do other wise and now this is strictly enforced, more so than previously.
