Ok I am new member to this site and I am hoping to get some help. I have a 02 Explorer 4.0 4x4 4 door. This morning when getting ready to leave for work I went out started it and let it run for 15 mins to warm up. Went back to get in and put it in gear and it does nothing. Makes a loud grinding noise like it is trying to find park, however, once pulled out of park, I cannot get it back in. Once I shift to drive it will not go any where. When I let my foot off the brake it rolls like it is in neutral. I finally got the shifter to go back into park, but it still rolls, like it isn't in Park. Can anyone help me on this matter. I am going to have to take it to a ford dealer, but I was kinda hoping to have some insight as to what the problem maybe before I take it there. I have 185000 on it and had the transmission rebuilt by Ford at 100,000. Please if anyone can help let me know. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!
I have exactly the same problem, happened on the freeway. Towed it to a rebuiler, they rebuilt it (no gears, just 'soft' parts and I drove it about 12 miles and it happened again. Shop is looking at it now, said they were able to get it back to normal by moving the 2wd 4wd dash switch. They are looking into the transfer case now
Incidentally I replaced the valve body about a year ago. I had been running without the front drive shaft because I was chasing a vibration that turned out to be in a wheel.

Same thin happened to me, I was trying to accelerate to pass a semi on the freeway, but nothing happens...and then the transmission or something, died....
Took mine to a shop, they rebuilt the transmission, replaced soft parts only, no gear or other hard part problems. Drove about 10 miles, happened again, replaced the valve body and it fixed it for good. My valve body was an aftermarket replacement I put in about a year earlier to solve the gasket problem that is discussed in other threads. I should have just replaced it again myself but I didn't haved time and I thought the transmission was a goner anyway. This way I spent $1,700 and have a warranteed transmission again. the shop did not try to diagnose the valve body issue but evidently it was a sudden and complete pressure drop
