Driving my Truck today and im getting a weird knocking sound..first i thought it was my engine but when i rev the motor with the truck outta gear there's no should. At around 1500-2000 rpm the noise is the loadest and seems to go away at higher rpm.i tried the driveshaft for play and couldnt find any but when i push the truck ahead im getting a click(when the trucks in park). It's a 03 FX4 shortwheel base.the rear u-joint was replaced once and the front Driveshaft u-joint hasnt been touched with 250,000km's on the vehicle.Has anyone had a simular sound?
thanks
When the driveshaft u-joints went out on my truck, it would make a clicking sound on deceleration.
If I was driving at 70 mph and took my foot off the gas, it would make a clicking sound from 70 mph to 50 mph and below 50 mph the noise would stop.
When we took off the driveshaft and pressed out the u-joints we found that the seal had failed, which allowed water to get at the needle bearings causing them to rust and fail.
I bought 2 new u-joints from Autozone for $30 and it was good as new.
Its very possible that the same thing has happened to your truck and while there isnt play, the u-joints arent moving as freely as they should and thats what the noise you are hearing is.
i went back outside and there is deffinatly a noise in the drive train.i can hear it by moving the truck with the front tire..i guess i'll find out tomorrow for sure when i take it to a garage.
