Water pump help

Well I think I am going to replace my water pump this Friday. Anybody have any suggestions for me. I am very mechanical inclined, but I have never worked on diesels before. I have built my fair share of gas motors, trannys, rear ends and many more things. Also. I would like to check the water to make sure the balance is right. Where can i get a few cheap test strips, and can somebody explain the process to check the water.

Also I am not entirely sure the water pump is going out. I drips a little when it is running, but for the life of me I have not had time to actually scout it out and find the leak. I did pop the hood and the water pump shaft had some play in it though. My question is, is there any other known place these things start leaking water?

The thermostat neck is always a big hitter. But as far as changing the pump, same as a gasser, but bigger fan. And these motors use orings instead of gaskets. It's pretty straight forward.

I don't know about the test strips.

The water pump has a weep hole on the bottom of the casting below the shaft. That should be your tattle tale spot. As far as removing the pump most use the water pump wrenches, one for the shaft nut (RH Thread) and the other slides over the 4 bolts that affix the pulley to the pump.

As far as the test strips International has them as well as many tractor dealers ie John Deere etc. Napa also has them but the last time that I tried to purchase from Napa they wanted to sell me a large jar for big bucks.

This is a good time to run some flush through the system to remove the old SCA from the inside of the block as it has a tendency to build up and hinders cooling. You might also consider changing the thermostat to the more desirable 203*.

I know this is starting to sound like an engine rebuild but it just covers some pit falls that have a tendency to rear their ugly head.

The lower out let is quite sturdy and rarely leaks after it is re-installed. The top one is a horse of a different color. It is made out of very thin, stamped metal and has a tendency to leak after re-installation even with a new O-ring. Bob at Diesel Site can supply you with the needed Items.

Truck stops and some Napa dealers sell a 50/50 mix green anti-freeze with SCA already added or you can use regular green anti-freeze and add the additive yourself. Napa and Ford sells the additive.

Hope this helps.
