I have a huge amount of play in my steering (88 f150 2wd). I've found a steering box still installed in a 90 4wd f150 at a local junkyard. Is there any difference in the 4wd box vs the 2wd box? Will it fit? How difficult should the swap be? Any tricks/tips?
Also - in the past week the truck has developed a violent shake at 40 - 45 mph. Could this just be the box getting looser? All other components seem tight.
I'm not sure if the two boxes are interchangable but replacing a box is a pretty easy job.
As long as you use line wrenches on your line fittings, you should have no problems.
If I remember correctly, there are 3 bolts holding it to the frame.
I have replaced the boxes on 3 of my older fords( 86,88,93), to me it seems they are a weak link, I don't know if I would stick a used box in, it may have the same loosenes yours has now.
