Does anyone have any recommendations for a preferred Syntec blend oil for my Expedition with 165k miles? I started using Valvoline Maxlife syntec blend with a Mobil one filter.
I drive it hard all across the country from Maryland to Washington state for work on pipelines with a fair amount of 4wheeling to the job sites. I religiously change it every 3k. Is this a good oil for the pounding it takes or is there something better?
Valvoline Maxlife is good oil. If you are mostly highway miles you are throwing money away by changing every 3000. Send an oil sample to blackstone labs next time you change oil and I bet they tell you to extend your oil changes. Do a google search of blackstone labs and/or bobtheoilguy.
ditto what jadmt says,my 04 e250 van has 148k miles on it-since dropping oem oil at 1k,been changing oil once a year with amsoil 0w20 and using amsoil eao filter, each time gets analyzed by blackstone, oil is still decent -zero problems
Thanks everyone for the info. That is what I thought about running longer between changes. Yes to jadmt that most are hwy miles with an average cruise speed of 85-90 mph when I go through the last two states, Montana and Texas pan handle where your the only one on the road.
Thanks for the Blackstone link, (didn't know but right in front of me) I'm sure it will be indispensable.
Since your doing a lot of highway miles I would look at using a full synthetic oil and going at least 5k miles between changes. Keep a couple extra quarts of oil in the vehicle in case you have to top off the oil level. I would just use motorcraft oil filters. The M1 filters are no better. A good inexpensive blended oil is Motorcraft. In your situation I believe you could safely get at least 4500 miles out of MC blend oil.
A for UOA it comes in handy but doesn't pay when only running 6 or 7 quarts of oil. It cost me $32.50 plus shipping to get the oil anylised with TBN for my truck. I was curious how the truck was doing thats why I sent for anylisis. IMO your better off $$$ wise just changing the oil. I can changed the oil in my 6.8l for $18 with MC 5w-20 and a MC filter. Just some food for thought.
I appreciate the info as it will deffinatly save $$. I wasn't sure about using a full syntec as hearing about leaks going to full syntec after using regular oil for the miles driven.

I think it pays in the fact that it gives peace of mind knowing that you can actually run 10,000 miles on mobil 1 or similar synthetic oil. A friend of mine is retired from Mobil 1 and he was the one who turned me on to Blackstone. He never changes before 10,000 miles in any of his vehicles because he said he has seen so many UOA's and he said never once has quality synthetic come back saying the oil is not still good after 10K miles. I personally do not go that long but if I was on the road all the time I would.
Even a good dino "fleet" oil can last 10,000 miles. The BMW oil life monitor system on my 1992 325i was calibrated for a maximum of 10,000 miles using recommended 15W-40 dino. I used Chevron Delo 400 in that car. The current BMW system is calibrated for a maximum of 15,000 miles on ACEA-rated (not just API SM) 5W-30 full syn.
I did a UOA on Havoline syn in the Toyota at 8000 miles and the TBN was pretty much used up, but all the other properties were well within spec for new oil.

That doesn't apply to late model vehicles. You will have no problem switching to a full synthetic. You'll probably use more of a full synthetic oil between changes because it has a tendency to vaporize and etc, but its nothing to worry about. Just check your oil regualrly which should be done anyway.

UOA is a good tool every once and a while just to see how the oil does over X amount of miles/time under the particular driving conditions of an individual. All my trucks take 6 quarts and it isn't cost effective for me to do a UOA for each oil change. I can buy 6 quarts of full synth and a filter for less than a UOA with TBN and have the benefits of fresh oil and filter.
I just got back UOA results from my last oil change. MC 5w-20 3k miles, 5 months 20 days of time on it. No shocker it had life in it so I'll run it longer next time. I mainly wanted a baseline to go off of under my conditions. I'm not making a habit out of UOA because I don't think its necessary, at least for my application.
Isn't Ford up to 8,000 miles recommended oil change intervals now with MC oil and filters.
BTW - I've yet to see or hear of an issue with MC oil. Excellent price, too, if you don't mind slogging through Wally's to get it.
BTW #2 - Blackstone is a great resource. I'm one of those oil 'nuts'; I even send samples in from my lawn mower. Sad.
8k now? I don't feel bad now. I've always run MC oil & filters (except once) and always changed the oil at 5k intervals. I let it slide a bit this last change because I was so busy and didn't have time on the weekends to change it. I ended up going 8300+ miles on last oil, but when it came out, it still looked really good. Had a nice bronze tint to it. If I'd known about Blackstone before now, I would have sent a sample in, just to see what they said.
