Here in Argentina we used this engine for almost every F-100 from 73 - 92. Is a good engine, it has enough torque... There is a variant of this engine called 221 SP the sp is for Sprint. It has a diferent camshaft, heads, intake and exhaust manifolds... And has more power and torque...
I've heard of it, as have many of the guys on the ford six site. More than anything, most of us (me included!) drool over the heads. I sure wish ford had done the removable intake head here in the US.

Yes, the heads are great... I have a 67 f-100 with a 221 SP engine and manual 4 spd. It has at least 210 HP.
It also hace a 7.50 camshaft, a racing exhaust and a Caresa Dino 40/40 carburator.. https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...?albumid=30564
