What kind of GPS does everyone have? Black Friday they are on sale at several different places. The one I am looking at is the TOMTOM its reg. 179.99 and on sale for 99.00. Has anyone got this one,and if so,is it any good? Also the Garmin Nuvi for 129.99. Whats everyones thought?
I have heard alot of good about Garmin haven't heard much about TomTom, how much is the service with one of these units or is it just but it and use it,
I have a Garmin Nuvi 350 and love it. It works very well and I have never had a problem with it. If you buy a garmin, make sure to register it on Garmin's site. It will unlock the newest map database as well as make you eligible for the next years update. The only recommendation I can make is to buy the external antenna if it is available for the unit you are looking at. Happy shopping.
I use a Garmin 360, but only while "on the road". I find it helpful to find things in the destination (unfamiliar) town.
I built a custom mounting bracket that mounts it right in front of my speedometer (who needs one when you've got the Nuvi data page in front of you). It allows me to push the touch screen through the steering wheel, is not in my line of view, and is extremely visible. I can still see all my gauges and trip odo.
I removed the bracket once I got back from my last trip, and have misplaced it, but when I find it I'll take some photos of it and stash in my gallery.
Only thing I wish it had was a "diesel-specific" fuel locator, but it finds food and lodging just fine.
Hey Scott, I've had a garmin and a magellan. I loved the garmin, it worked great. The magellan was a piece of crap. I don't know too much about tomtom, other than they have a good reputation. As far as fees. My garmin had free Internet updates. The piece of junk Magellan used pre loaded SD cards, that had to be purchased separately.
Another vote for Garmin, you get one free updated and the rest you have to pay for. There is not monthly fee. The fuel locator and the food locator are good too, that way you can pick out where you want to eat without pulling off and looking around.
I got the wife a Tom Tom which I borrow for out of town trips. Neat little toy, but not 100% accurate. It's sent me to the wrong part of a street once, and after looking at a map, it doesn't always take the quickest route.
I've got the Garmin Nuvi 360 and my daughter has my old Garmin 330c StreetPilot. Both are great devices.
If you get the chance to see one, also check out the new Goodyear units. I saw them a couple of weeks ago at SEMA and really liked them. They also have a feature Garmin doesn't - they maintain real-time calculation of 6 alternate routes so there's no recalc time if you make a wrong turn.

.
If you travel with any of them enough you will find some inacurate streets or roads in all of them
I have used both Garmin and Magellan and find they both work pretty good
I now have a Magellan 760 and really like it althouh it is a little large beause of the 10 gig harddrive built in
I have found where I travel it is good to get one that you can add an external antenna
I have the Garmin 2720 it works great and is waterproof so it can go on motorcycle. The new model is called Zumo. If you travel alot make sure you get one that holds all of the North America maps so you dont have to reload for different zones.
