Transmission problem

I noticed the other day that when the key is on with engine off a buzzing noise comes from the transmission. I unplugged connector on the right side of the transmission and the noise stopped. I plugged it back in and the noise started again. I also noticed when the throttle was bumped the noise would stop until the throttle was released. Functionally the transmission seems to be working properly. any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Also the check engine light is not flashing, but the 4x4 light is flashing. anyone run in to this before?

The 4WD shift motor could be stuck.

I had the flashing 4x4 light and I could hear a clicking noise at the same time several years ago. I suspected that my 4x4 was not engaging fully, so I got in the habit of shifting into neutral before engaging 4 Hi also. I have never had the flashing 4 x4 light since then. I know to shift in 4 hi you shouldn't have to shift into neutral first, but if you ever had an older 4 wheel drive with a manual shifter for the four wheel drive you will understand what it took to engage fully.
