I have an 84 Bronco, and an wanting to put 40's on it, Iam having the enigne done right now(351W bored .30, new everything 500 lift cam bumped up compression), but an wondering how much lift I am going to need, and what size gears I will need. I will probably swap in a solid front axle.
I would guesstimate at least 10 inches but probably closer to 12" unless you trim your fenders.Remember, Wide tires may rub on radius arms in full turns.
As far as gears, I would go 4:11 or some where about there.
My brother runs 4.10's w/ 40's on his jeep but I would say that more gear is in order. His is alright but that little AMC 304 was struggling. He has almost completed a 460 swap so power shouldn't be a problem any more. W/ your Bronco I would go w/ something in the 4.88-5.13 range.
I would also swap out both axles. Neither the dana44 TTB nor the 8.8" rear is up to the task of touting around 40's There's a guy around here that has 40's on his 93(?) 1/2 ton Ford and he has had to fix the axle like 4 or 5 times now cause those 40's keep breaking it.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 31-May-02 AT 10:38 AM (EST)]i would go with 4.56-4.88 gears, or if your seriously going to wheel it 5.13's. im going to run 4.56's with my 36s. i would swap out your axles too. im putting in a GM14bolt rear and a D60 front under my truck pretty soon to handle the stress of a big block engine and later more lift and bigger tires.
