PCM controls what side???

So earlier this week when we had a guy from Caterpillar come in to teach some stuff and I asked what does the PCM/ECM control circuit wise..... and he replied - Positive side for Cat medium and Heavy duty diesel engines. He does'nt know anything besides what Cat uses so He couldnt answer my question on light duty diesels ......... so here it is guys/gals.....Does the PCM/ECM (whatever you feel like calling it) on the "light duty" engines control the negative or "ground" side like the gasoline powered cars & trucks, or Postive side like in the heavier over-the-road trucks?

In most Light-Duty applications (Cars and Trucks), the ECM usually supplies a common 12v output and controls the ground side of most solenoids, injectors, coils, etc. The only deviation to this is in the case of some high voltage injectors which may be triggered on the positive side. I think the Cummins 24v might be positive triggered, but I'm not 100% sure. The 7.3L injection system is a ground triggered style.

Hope this helps.

Thank you very much. If 7.3L is a negative controlled, does that mean the other diesels are negative too or are they Positive?

This would mean that the rest of the systems tied to the ECM in the truck are ground controlled also, wouldnt it?

Yes, all the systems on pretty much every Ford is negative controlled. I can't speak intelligently on Dodge or GM, although I can't see why they would be any different.

Take care.
