Hi Guys!!!

Newby here tryin to help my cousin from Iowa from West Virginia...his internet sux!!
He has a 91 F 350 7.3 diesel 2 wd with a 5 spd. He's sure the batteries & connections are good, but I said to REALLY test the batteries, at Auto Zone.
Not alot of good tools. He has a no start & when key goes to ignition on....everything goes dead, I mean everything! No lights even dome lights, no dash lights, no, wait to start light. He won't believe a bad battery but I convinced him to take the batteries to town & test them right, & buy a cheap hydrometer. Well...after he does that & IF they are good are there any bright ideas out there???? I read alot of the glow plug posts & controler posts to him. I saw the water ingress posts at the harness plug. Any better suggestions?? Seems like a nice truck....newer engine & trans. Needs brake work & definately needs to start....LOL! What are there for fusible links & I thought that year had a couple in line fuses for the glow plug circuit....I may be wrong.....He thinks it looks like someone has bypassed something in that area. Thanks for any ideas!!

there are several fusible links at the fender mounted starter solenoid
there is also a power feed wire attached there that comes from the positive battery cable terminal on the passenger side
if he is losing everything it has to be the main power feed wire and he could have corroded battery cables causing this also

cleudard01,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

Skip the hydrometer cost.

Take the batteries to most any parts house that sells batteries and have them tested.
Given the cold winter is here, the batteries need to be in top shape and at least 850 CCA.
Bigger is better in the battery department, I am running 1000 CCA's in mine.

Tell him to inspect the passenger side battery terminal.
Look for signs the cable has been hot, discolored or brittle cracking insulation.
Also look for signs of the cable swelling.

What this would indicate is corrosion inside the battery terminal where the wires connect.

When everything goes dead when the big load from the glow plugs, does power return after the key is turned off?
Or does he have to do something to get the power to return?

Where are you in WV?
