Oil Level Question

Ok - I am not the most technical person here, but explain to me the hash marks on the engine oil dipstick. I noticed the dealership filled it ABOVE the hashmark, but BELOW the little hole in the dipstick near where it says MAX. Is it over-filled or not? The Service Manager said as long as it is between the two drilled holes - MIN and MAX - that the oil level is ok.

I have a 2004 5.4 liter - supposed to take 6 quarts.

I've always been under the assumption that as long as the level is between the MIN and MAX lines, you are fine (1 quart). I have seen some dipsticks without the words engraved and just the hash marks as a reference to go by. I'd say check your owner's manual and go by what it says.

you are ok as long as u are in between the lines... i believe its a plus or minus 1 quart difference in that area. when i do an oil change i make sure im right below the max line... and if i was taking a long trip...id rather have it be closer to the max line than the min...

Thanks for the responses Mook and Expy Sport. I checked it again after it sat longer and it is still aboce the hash marks and right on the upper MAX dot. I suppose then from what you guys are saying since the hash mark area represents a quart, it is probably not a bad idea if it a tad over the hash mark.

Thanks again....
