Hi guys, I got a 2001 E150 van with a 4.2 V6 at work. The thing started running really rough a while back, stalling out on the road, and the CEL came on, so I parked it. Well I finally got around to looking at it mainly because the transmission went out on another van and the spare had a bad axel seal. When I pulled the code I got the dreaded P0340 code. If you’re familiar with the location you’ll understand when I say that I was none to eager to replace it. Being that we needed another van up and running I had little choice. Spent a couple of hours getting the old one out and a new one in. The old one looked fine. The magnet hadn’t dropped or anything like I’ve had in the past. The vane on the synchronizer was also ok, no dents or dings. I shrugged and went ahead and replaced the sensor anyway. Got everything put together and took her for a test drive. Same damn thing happened that happened with the old sensor. She bucked the whole way and even stalled out twice. Got her back to the office and started checking the circuit. I have voltage and a ground at the connector to the sensor. I got good ohm readings between the connector and the PCM on the signal return (CID).
<O</O Right now I’m kind of baffled. I figure that I’ve either got a bad gear on the synchronizer or a short in the PCM. I’m hoping you guys have some other ideas because replacing either of these is a real PITA. I’ve also pondered the thought that AZ sold me a bad sensor (wouldn’t be the first time).
I am not that familiar with the details of the 4.2 but on most of the Ford V6's the sensors sits attop what looks like the base of a distributor. Is this what you are calling the synchronizer?
On the ones I have seen, the tab that engages the cam sensor is broken off requiring that the entire cam sensor mount be replaced as without the tab the sensor won't turn.
Exactly, the sensor sits on top of what looks like a small distributor. I’ve had issues with several Fords where the magnet would drop of and destroy the vane aka tab thus necessitating the replacement of the entire synchronizer distributor thing. This time however that was not the case. The magnet had not dropped off and appeared fine. The vane was not damaged in any way. I replaced the sensor anyway figuring that it might still be something wrong with it. No dice, the thing is still running rough, stalling out, throwing the code. The only thing I can think of is that the gear on the bottom of the synchronizer may be stripped out, or a short in the PCM as I’ve confirmed I have power and continuity on all the wires between the PCM and sensor. I was hoping that someone else may have another idea as those are even a bigger PITA to replace than the sensor.
Also if you look into the van the CPS is located on top of the engine towards the front on the passenger side. It sits beneath the EGR and the hard plumbing to and from the water pump. It’s a real chore to get to.
