Trans alignment dowels

Trans alignment dowels

What is the purpose of the alignment dowels besides helping to get the trans in the righ tposition? I know this sounds stupid but I've been told many different things. What happens if one/both break? Can they be replaced? I'm sure they're there for a reason other than helping to get everything together. Thanks and please don't laugh.....

keep the tranny lined up if you will notice they fit a lot tighter than the bolts it doesn't take much out of line to be major problems. I think on a 855 cummins the bellhousing had to be within .004 if it was much more than that you had vibrations that if you were lucky the clutch broke if not the crankshaft broke.

Some guys go to great lengths with off-set or eccentric pins to get everything lined up perfectly.

You will find this to be a common theme with any machinery you take apart. Bolts are not good locators, since they need clearance for you to be able to install them and tighten them. They are only good for holding stuff together. Anything that needs a precision fit and alignment, will have alignment pins, dowels, or some other machine work to actually locate the piece being bolted together.

Many times when the factory is machining the pieces, they will actually install the alignment dowels and bolt the piece together, and then finish machining both pieces together.
