I don't think so. you know these 4x4 systems turn themselvs on and off whenever it feels like it. is there a way that the 4x4 is not turning off because that is what it seams like.
The engagement and disengagement of the system is electric. If the motor is gummed up it can very well stick. GM used an electric actuator on the front axle in their 4x4 trucks for a long time, they were notorious for failing and leaving you without 4x4.
I had my 08 mariner 4x4 out just today on snow covered roads and I felt some binding when I turned a sharp corner, but I know the 4x4 was engaging as it detected wheel slipage. Let me know that it was doing it's job.
I'm not positive about how the 4WD system functions as far as activating and deactivating, but I'm 100% certain that the non-4WD Escape is front wheel drive and 99.9% certain that the front axles are CV joint and not universal joint. I'm also near positive that even in the 4WD version, the front drive wheels never disengage.
You shouldn't feel any binding in the front wheels at all IMO. I've spun the front wheels in snow with full steering deflection and never felt even the slightest bit of binding. All three of my Escapes have been FWD only.
It deffently feels like the 4wd it stuck on I have however notiset that after i floor it, at the next turn it dosn't bind up for a little while but it dose come back when it cools down and i drive it again. I also notised a clunck in the rear when in a tight turn. any help is appreashed.
