Timing sensor

Does all IDI's have the timing sensor. I have 2 86's that there is nothing different on any of the injectors. What exaclty does it do.

Looking at pictures makes me think this is not actually a sensor but maybe an extention that you can remove to hook a timing adaptor to the injector to time the engine.
Anybody know.

The older IDI's used a luminocity probe to view the fire in the hole for timing, so no adapter, the sensor on the newer IDI injector is to fit the Rotunda (Ford) pulse adapter. Many other pulse adapter timing kits will clamp directly onto the 1/4 steel line.

I have seen a couple 87 6.9's that did have the timing sensor, but none older.

Yes there is one on my engine, but it has a 94 turbo fuel system on it.
