On my 1986 F150 with a 302 EFI, when I hit the gas a little or just idleing I can here a little whining sound. It almost sounds like a turbo whistle, but kind of different. I havent been able to find where the sound is coming from. Do you guys have any idea what it could be, or if it is normal. Im wondering if it could be my power steering pump?? It has a new water pump, and alternator. It doesnt have an emmisions pump, or AC pump on it so could it be the power steering pump?
Thanks alot,
Blake
could be a bearing in any of the following, water pump, alternator, power steering, etc. Anything that is driven by the belt. Just leave it run and go outside under the hood, give it a lil gas and listen for where the noise is coming from. Obviously, be careful of the belts/fan, and make sure your'e in park/neutral if manual, and have the brake set or the wheels chocked. I know that you said you replaced several parts, but check them again to just make sure. Is it a serpentine belt system? If so, check the tensioner pulley. I've had them go bad. And yes, it is possible for it to be the power steering pump.
Does it whine all the time, or just at a certain outdoor temperature? Does it make noises when you take a turn? My truck has this same issue, but only when it's cold outside. I haven't looked yet, but I'd say it's my power steering pump (it gets louder when I steer it). Maybe that could be the issue with your truck?
Thanks for the replys. It isnt a serperntine setup, and I just put the alternator on 2 weeks ago and it did it before and after that, so I would say probably not the alternator but who knows. My belts used to squeal if thats what you wondering, but i put new belts on it, and its been fine since then, but this noise is I guess more of a whistle sound a turbo makes in semi trucks. Its hard to explain. It stays the same when I steer also.
thanks
Blake
I went out and looked it over today, checking all the fluids out and the power steering is way low on fluid. Im hoping I caught it in time before it ruins it, but only time will tell I guess. Im going to get some fluid tomorrow and see if that fixes the noise or if it is something else.
Thanks for the info on the vacumm leak, if this doesnt stop it I will have to try that.
