I have a '96 F-250 with a 7.5L and E40D. How do I tell if I have OBD-I or OBD-II? I am planning a conversion to MAF and I know that the '96 F-series with the 5.8 were OBD-II but I have read in the forums that the trucks with the 7.5L were OBD-I.
How do I tell if I have OBD-I or OBD-II? If I have OBD-I what problems will I encounter puting the OBD-II harness and computer in my truck?
I have not heard of any 460 motors getting OBD-2 though some OBD-1 models(california) got mass air. Additionally.. in 1996 only light trucks under 8500lbs GVWR went OBD-2, so many of the heavier E and F series carried OBD-1 powertrains to the end of '97.
So I would have to find a truck such as a '96 F-150 or a light duty F-250 with the 5.8 and E-40D to pull the parts off of to do it right without having to splice or alter the harness very much if any?
If you don't want to get into harness alterations you want a mass air computer and engine harness for an OBD-1 460, don't know how much luck you're gonna have finding those bits considering how rare these were. The other solution would be to get a 5.0 or 5.8 mass air computer and donor harness and pull what you need from it to add to your harness. You will then need to get a tuner to setup the computer for the 24lb injectors, larger displacement, and larger MAF meter that the 460 requires. Without a tuner there really isn't much point to this conversion because the motor will run worse than it does now.
Thank you. I will start looking for what I need. As for the tuners would the Tweecer handle the retuning I would need or would a different tuner be better?
Yes a tweecer will do it, and if you're a little more tech savvy and want an even cheaper solution you can investigate the moates products.. Welcome to www.moates.net! : Moates.Net.
I am thinking that I will go with the Tweecer tuner. I like the way their setup looks and sounds. Plus I here a LOT of good things about it from this forum.
