Anyone tried this yet ? 1978 F150 460 Eng. Would like to use Edelbrock Performer RPM intake will this clear the hood ?? By my math this intake is 1.36" taller than stock lets round it off and say 1 3/8" . Next the carb Edelbrock 750 cfm or Holley 770 cfm street avenger ?? I have used Holley for years would like some feedback on carbs Pro's v.s. Con's
I would think clearence should be fine, to make sure just set a short pice of 2X4 (that is about 1 1/2" thick) on top of your air cleaner and slowly lower the hood, watching to see if there is any interference.
Either carb will work fine, just a matter of personal preference.
if you have used holleys for years you might as well keep using them. they are just as good as a carter could ever be if you know what you are doing.
do you think you need a carb that big? something like a 675-725 cfm range will do a alot expecially in something heavy and under 5000 rpm even with 460 ci.
Edelbrock carbs will not leak, the fuel level never reaches the gasket, that is one excellent reason to get one, i hate leak carbs wasteing expensive fuel and making a mess all over the engine, plus they are easy to tune and mine came out of the box and bolted it on and hooked it up and turned the key and vroom! it started, plus you can get a re manufactured one from Edelbrock for cheap, mine was a reman and its only a 600 cfm but i have a stock 71 302 and there's no need for any bigger, that cost me about 249.99 before taxes Canadian, but that was when my dollar was on par with the U.S. dollar, i am sure it would cost me more now, and the Edelbrock is better on gas from what i hear, as long as you keep your foot out of it, plus i think it looks better to have a Edelbrock carb on a Edelbrock intake! and you can't go wrong with Edelbrock there made in the good ole U.S.A. not china or Mexico like other company's are, i am not sure where Holley carbs are made, but i know Edelbrock is made in the U.S.A. plus a little interesting info, Edelbrock carbs are based off of the weber carb, mine says weber on the side, but of course has Edelbrock labels, and there based off of the carter carbs as well, just my two cents, and good luck with your project, and please post pics of the final decision!
I have a Carter AFB 625 cfm with a 1" spacer and 1/2" spreadbore to squarebore adapter on my F250 with a 460 and still have room above the air cleaner. Stock manifold though. Works for me.
on my "501" i run a edelbrock air gap intake,750 edelbrock carb with 1" spacer.4"k&n air filter still lots of room even if you rip out a motor mount like i did nothing touched the hood [spent 1/2 a day after that replacing motor mounts and fabercating chains and turnbuckels to hold the dang thing in place in break stand mode]
I've run all different carbs from Carter, to Rochester to Edelbrock to Holley and it really isn't that much of a difference on the street. I've never had a Holley leak fuel NEVER. I bought a brand new Holley 600 with electric choke and the floats are non adjustable and the carb worked perfect right out of the box. I put it on the engine and turned it over and it fired up as soon as gas got to the carb. I have it on my 390 and she runs smooth as can be. I had an edelbrock on my 78 Bronco with a 351M and it ran fine. I personally prefer a Holley. Just my choice. I've had more of them then any other carb. To me it's the best out there.
I don't know if this helps, but I have a 70/71 Licoln 460 under the hood of my 78 F-150, with a Edelbrock Performer 460 intake and a Holley 4160 Carb. and I have no problems with Hood Clearnce.
It "should" clear your hood, and firewall If it doesnt, you can look into a smaller diameter air cleaner, or a drop base unit, depending on which is interfering.
Weiand Stealth, Speed demon carb, 14x5 K&N, on a 3" body lift truck
how long did it take you to get your Demon tuned properly? i'm kind of leery but i think i did the smart thing and bought the book but i haven't finished it yet.
It is a 650 that I got used. The only issue I had with it was it had a fuel regulator that was turned down to zero, so at WOT, my truck would run out of fuel when it was in the secondaries. It took me a while to figure it out, once I did, it ran like a charm. I tried different jets, different springs for the secondary diagram, various idle mixture and timing settings. The only thing that worked prior to that was slowing down.....
I am running an edelbroke performer intake with a 750 holley model 4160 on my 429 in my 75 f-100 4x4 with a 3 inch crome air cleaner and don't have any clearance problems. There is a picture of it in my avitar. I painted the motor yellow though.
