ok the 89 in my sig
i hit water or anything in mud if its really wet it gets on the distributor im guessing and shorts something out as it gets all ****y running and misses then it will quit then you start it it will run for a while bad then clear up
my 87 never did this even when it flooded water was surrounding hte motor and it ran fine
so the question is is there away to i guess "waterproof" the distributor and do you just put a sealant from the wire to plug?
any help is appreciated
Awhile back I was having some "moisture" issues we'll say...Even damp mornings would be enough to give me trouble starting her. I, after some research here, lubed up both ends of each plug wire and coil wire with die-electric grease. I used a liberal amount and found it solve my problems.
I found that I need to re-apply about every 6 months...or at least check them. Usually a fresh application is in order.
This may or may not solve your problem, but it may help and it is very cheap(under$10). I will also mention that It have the same engine as yours...4.9 EFI
Good luck and keep us posted.
Two things;
1. People use dielectric grease on the contact portion of the wires/plugs. This is incorrect dielectric grease is used as an insolator use it only to help the boots seal.
2. Spray WD-40 inside the distributor and cap, wait for it to "dry" then reinstall and go. This is actually what WD-40 was engineered for. WD stands for Water Dispersant, 40 is formula 40. NASA made it to prevent condinsation on the circuts in the spacecraft.
i use rtv silicone and sealed the plug ends to the plug wires, sealed the bottom of the distributor cap, put some around the terminals on the distributor cap and sealed the wires to the cap, and also used one of the mustang boot cover thingies, sealed up pretty good but i found my problem was all the fuel injection wires were not sealed, so i switched to a carb and threw the fuel injection crap away
