Electrical "theory" question.....

I already posted this question on the Jeep ZJ board, but since it is not "car" specific, I'll see if anyone can give me an answer here:

I'm in the process of installing a set of el white gauge faces on my '94 Grand Cherokee. The wiring is pretty straight forward except for one thing. In addition to the el converter inputs (power and ground) and the outputs to the gauge faces, there is a small pot for dimming purposes connected to the inverter. The wiring is supposed to be hooked up to a 12 volt power source. I would like to bypass the pot (just turn it on to max illumination) and feed power to the inverter from the "dimmer" circuit of the dash. Therefore eliminating the need to mount that little dimmer pot that came with the gauges.

What I'm worried about is varying the input voltage to the inverter and somehow damaging it.

Anyone have any expertise in this area???

Thanks,

Varying the input voltage to the EL power supply will not dim the EL light, until you lower it so much that the power supply starts shutting off. Since the EL panel is a very low power device, you are not likely to hurt its power supply by doing this. It's just not a very effective way of dimming the panel.
