Has anyone swapped-out the 4 speed tranny behind the flathead and installed the T-19 with 4.02 gear?? It would be nice to have the use of a 4 speed and use all the gears. If you have seen the pictures of my truck you can see it's stump pulling day are over. The T-19 being a top loader would be a great replacement since there would be no new holes in the floorboard. All comments welcome.
I've noticed a lot of references to the different T-series of Borg Warner trannys here.
I am wondering if anybody has a list of descriptions of the different trannys and the old Ford trucks they were used in. It would also be nice to know which ones are directly interchangeable. I'm told I have a T-98 in the last truck I acquired but I have not looked at it or taken the truck apart, so I don't know much about it. I do know I am probably going to sell it when I take the truck apart.
In my first 48 f1 attempt, I set a 400 engine in the bay, and had a T19 bolted to it, the tranny lined up pretty close, but the shifter would hit the dash, so bending back a bit would be necessary. Also, the mounting surface below the trans' rear output housing lined up on the crossmember, but since the F1's crossmember has a half-round on it, I switched to an F2 crossmember, which fit, and allowed a flat surface. Unfortunately, the frame was shot, and I since then started over with another truck. All this was behind a 400 Ford, and not the flattie. Just food for thought.
Before I started this post I did search but found no referance to a T-19 mated to a flathead. The research I've done has not turned up anything. One would think that this would be a great swap. My feeling is that someone has done it, we just need to find him/them. The search continues. Thanks Marty.

Havi, do you have any pictures? Do you still have the T-19? How does it compare to the Flatty tranny? Thanks Marty
Unfortunately, I can't find any pics. The trans I had came from a 1986 F250 2wd. Np435, T18, T19 all are similar, yet each can have a different way it mounts to the frame or output shaft and tailhousing. One thing I haven't done yet, is compare the 59T 4 speed with any other trans I have laying around. I would say the newer trans cases are a bit bigger, though. The tail section is what is totally different. The Hogshead on the flattie I have has 4 bolt holes that are offset a bit, which makes it different than the newer style 4 speeds, too. Machining a new hole pattern might work. T5's have adapter kits for the flattie, and that is the route I am taking, myself.

I've looked at the T-5 but didn't care for the shifter location. Even with a mid shifting tail section it put the shifter around 9 inch back from the orginal location.
