I have been trying the Motorcraft Cetane Booster in my F250 FX4 for about 2 weeks now. In terms of MPG, it is only getting about .2 or .3 mpg better with the cetane booster (not much of a difference). However, it does seem to run a little better, with a little more power. Also, it does not seem to go into REGEN as often. You only use a few ounces per tankful. One bottle lasts about 4 or 5 tanks.
You really need to run several tanks of fuel under similar conditions to see if there is any difference. MPG can change due to driving conditions. We do use a booster and we do see a difference. I think that it runs better. Remember the federal requirement for cetane is 40 MOSTdiesel fuel comes out of the refinery at 42..These new trucks run best at 45. The only station that we have seen thus far that post acetane rating of 42 are the Hess stations here in Florida.. Shell premium is allegedly 50 although we have not seen that posted.
The lubricating properties are what really matters up here. The Cetane levels are so low that you almost have to add something to the fuel to make sure you get the lubrication going again.
I Just bought a case of the amsoil cetane boost, I have no idea how to tell if I am getting good diesel or bad, I do know that the place I usually buy diesel ran out completely, I filled up not long after they re-filled and it was the worst mileage I've had out of the truck to date, from what I'm reading cetane boost can not hurt, only help....
Here in VA, there are two local places that have higher cetane fuel. One is the Flying J and their's is 45 cetane at the auto fueling station. The other is a small fuel service about 20 miles away that has 47 cetane. My truck seems to run better on the 45 at the Flying J and the mileage is slightly better but I haven't tried the 47 at the other place yet.
