I have a set of thumper ported E7TEs that i was gonna use on a 302 build up, then 331, 347, maybe 351. I can't decide on a engine to push around 35" tires as a daily driver for the next year or 2 yet. (4.56-4.88 gears)
I can't really find a 351w short block, but since E7s came stock on 351's, how do you think a professionally ported set would do on a 393. Mike guarrentees that they outflow stock GT40s, with smaller ports and valves so i have more velocity.
not sure how much velocity i would need when building for the larger displacement though.
In the future, when i get a newer truck and feel the need for more power i could always get AFRs and a more aggressive cam.
I'm not looking for extreme torque or HP now, i want a reliable daily driver with good low-end for city traffic and occasional off-roading. A nice flat torque curve starting damn near idle-1200 rpms.
So with a matching intake and camshaft(comp or jay allen) would my ported E7TEs suffice? say around 350-400ft/lbs and 300-350 HP?
Ported stock heads are restrictive on a 302 if maximum HP is your goal. On a 351 anything less than AFR185's will hurt TQ and HP. You will get big TQ with ported E7's on a 351 but the fun is all over at 4500rpm, and that would be closer to 3500rpm on a stroker. In all cases they'll make a little over 300hp if the porting work is good, the peak will just be lower the bigger the motor. I have driven the motor you want for the last 8 years(351 with ported heads, cam, and headers) and it's a lot of fun, blows away anything you can do with a 302.
I asked the question before i did much research on the 393, and most info seems to point in the same direction you gave me. If i go with the 393, I'm beginning to believe i will definitely need better flowing heads, and sell my thumpers or save em for a stang later on.
However, if i could only find a 351w shortblock from a company with a good reputation then i might stay with them. Found proformance unlimited, but it seems no one has heard of them, so it's a no-go there. maybe some TFS or world products heads won't empty the wallet too bad.
are you wanting the motor to turn 35" tires? it would be cheaper and more benificial to get the gears installed now. a motor build will cost as much if not more and the gains might not be what you expect to turn those tires with stock gearing. not to mention the rest of the drivetrain and the strain to those parts.

I currently have the stock 3.55s pushing some 31x10.50s. And thats what'll be on there when i install whatever new motor i end up getting along with a zf-5 tranny. When i get the lift, tires, and probably 4.56 gears i'll try to get them installed at the same time, same place.
