IIRC the resistance should be between 10 - 20 ohms. Last time I checked mine was 14 ohms.

Where did you find the resistance value for a good heater? I just spent half an hour going thru the Helms manual and all it says in the pinpoint tests is to check the continuity in both the cord and heater separately and replace which ever one shows an open circuit. I really expected to find an ohm range for a good heater but it just wasn't there.

Cut the plug off and recheck. Most failures occur at the plug end and you have nothing to loose. If so then just bye a replacement plug .. cheep fix.

Word of mouth .. this question came up a while back. I remembered tj responding indicating it should be between 10 - 20 ohms. Being the curious guy I am I checked mine at it measured at 14 ohms.

Yea me too! I just checked mine, 16.3 with the cord attached and 14.5 at the heater. I guess that's what an unused one should read as mine has never been plugged in.

Phil,
I wouldn't cut the plug off the cord just yet, unplug the cord from the heater and check each piece individually.

I checked the heater by itself and it showed no resistance the cord was already bad. by the way would that be the ford part number and can I get it any where other than ford.

Yeah those are Ford numbers, I'm sure you could get it from IH but I don't know the part numbers. I'm kinda surprised that NAPA doesn't have it, maybe it was just the counter guy that didn't know how to look it up.

The good new is I do have the IH parts breakdown .. bad news it's in Spanish. That being said the pictures indicated the heater element is part # 1814323C1. It does not show the actual heater cord.
