Installation of 4

I a considering the 4in skyjacker lift and i was wandering if there were any curve ***** i should be aware of. Are there any special tools, parts, or problems i should be aware of? Its just the basic 4in, is this a good lift to get?

Thanks,
henry

Great lift one of the best. You will need extended brake lines though. A lift kit is pretty simple to install. You obv need some jack stands and a floor jack. You will need either a 1 1/8th wrench, or deep socket with a long extension. I used the 1 1/8 wrench and snuck it through the coil to back the nut off. The kit comes with all the instructions that you need. Pretty straight forward.

Primary rig is Green Thunder:
95' F-150 XLT 4x4, 302, 5 spd, MSD 6A, Flowmaster American Thunder Exhaust, Sunroof, CD player with 2 10" subs and some 32" BFG Muds .

Check out my Gallery for a look-see.

Then theres:
99' Mustang GT 4.6L
88' F-250 Superduty 4x4 351/c6
95' Mercury Cougar 4.6L V-8
80' E-350 300/6 with a
3 spd column shifter. Top speed is 65mph, Go Baby Go!

I used a torch quite a bit for my Bronco. To loosen up bolts I mean.

The only specialized tool you are going to need is a pitman arm puller. Sometimes pitman arms can be a real bear to get off without one. If you don't have one you can probably rent one from Pep Boys etc..

Installation of 4

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-Jul-02 AT 04:51 PM (EST)]How long would it take for a VERY moderately mechanically-inclined person to install? I want to put on a 4" lift, but the $600+ installation cost is really more than I want to pay - doubles the cost! The truck is my daily driver, so I can't take more than a day or so.

I've got all the basic tools, plus a few electric power tools (electric impact wrench, for example), a big floor jack, and 2 stands. Honestly, I'd rather spend part of the $600 on more tools to do the job, if necessary.

Anyone in the Dallas area suffering from lift-installation withdrawals and wanna help, for maybe a case of beer or something?

It shouldn't take you more than say 6-8 hours IF you don't run into any unexpected problems such as stripped/seized bolts, holes that don't line up etc.. That's when tools like die grinders, torches, porta powers, air hammers, etc. come in handy.

Where there is a will, there is a way.

My 95 didn't need the torch. Spray every nut and bolt down with some PB blaster. I'm gonna say it needs more than 6-8 hours for someone who's never done it before. Took me 3 non-solid days. You're probably going to need a hand here and there so have a buddy on tap. The pitman arm on my truck would not come off, so i took a die grinder with a skinny disk, cut into it in two places. Got as close as i could and just wacked it with a hammer until it broke. You don't need the stocker anyway so who cares. My truck was a daily driver too. This is what i did so you can drive it inbetween the install. I put the extended brake lines on first, which you need. Then I put the lift blocks on the back with the new rear shocks. The rear needs to be jacked up pretty high so make sure you are high enough. Drove it around until the weekend with the **** in the air. Then at night i set it up on stands and got it ready for the morning. In the morning I took an air chisel and cut the rivets off the radius arm brackets (i used drop brackets w/ the kit) and bolted them on. Then I did one side at a time, putting the jack under one axle and letting it drop down just enough so it was resting on the jack. Make sure you jack the truck up high enough that when you let the suspension drop down, you still have room to go because those new springs are longer! Once you get the spring in you can unbolt the axle pivot bolt and unbolt the bracket and replace it with the new one and bolt it back up. You will need 18 and 21mm sockets at times. I believe the shock bolts up front are 18. And like I said before you will need a 1 1/8 wrench and have a bar to put over it for more leverage. Unless you know the trick of hooking another big wrench on there for more torque. If you need to, E-mail me at GreenThunder2195(No Email Addresses In Posts!) and I can help you out. I have a digital camera that I can take quick pictures too. It's simple but time consuming. That 6-8 hour guestimate is alil off, it took me probably 12 hours but i do work slow. For a first timer it takes a bit of time.

I know your gonna run into minor problems and complications so i'd expect it to be about 9-10 solid hours. Give it the weekend.

MGT221 - thanks, I think I might go ahead and do it myself. May have to buy a few tools, but since the wife already gave me the go-ahead to do it with the $600 installation, I don't think she'll mind a few tools instead... plus I get new tools!!

Brian - it's a '92 Bronco XLT

I think you can do it, i was 17 when i did mine last year and didn't have much for major modification experience. It's pretty straight forward.

better count on 3 days if you average about 6-8 hour days. I just put on a rancho and that's what it took me... of course when it's 110 degrees out, u can't work too long out there.

fnx4wlr
ps. no major glitches, just little stuff- rent a pitman arm puller from checker auto or the like.

FNX4WLR: what truck did you put it on? I just read a tech article last night where a guy put on a Rancho 4" and had to do all kinds of torching, cutting, etc to get it on properly. Made me re-think the idea of having it done professionally. (http://www.abysmal.com/bronco/suspension/suspension.html)

The skyjacker kit doesn't require any cutting or welding it's all bolt on. I did weld the passanger bracket on along with the bolts for extra strength. There is that 4" skyjacker kit going on Ebay for cheap, i'd look into it. It ls only missing a pitman arm but you can get one of those easy. Has everything you need otherwise.
