it would not be good for the guy at AutoZone today...who says a girl can't own a powerstroke AND work on it??
that being said, i'm going to hurt something if i can't get the !@#$ bolt back on now that i've changed the air filter...grrrr. then oil and fuel filter change tomorrow, new tranny pan early this week, cosmetics if i have time, and leavin' friday for our trip!
and on an unrelated side note: where would i find the track bars on a 94 cummins? how do i figure out if it's bad and how hard to replace? (it's my lil sister's...and it failed inspection!)
just got done reading a bunch of old threads about air filters- trying to remember why it was i wasn't supposed to get a k&n, lol!! my set-up looks totally different from most of the pictures, i guess cause it's still stock, and i think maybe i see why yall replace it...what was in there was a ford filter and a piece of black foam wrapped around it just sitting in the box. doesn't seem like it'd be real good at keeping dirt out?

Go with a 6637 filter, you can get them from fleetfilter.com for $28, you can get a piece of 4 inch exhaust pipe bent to a 45 degree angle and it will hook right up. Much better than the stock deal..
The track bar on sis's truck is on the front axle.......should be on the same angle as the drag link off the steering box ...track bar will be mounted to the frame(drivers side) and the axle(passenger side)
You should be able to buy a whole new bar pretty cheap with new bushings.
Usually the track-bar only has a problem at the upper mount.
There are repairs "kits" for this and it's a lot cheaper than a track bar will cost.
My Dad just fixed his '97 with a "kit" I'll try to find out what he used and where he got it.
If you don't want to wait I'm sure you can find it on the internet.
Tell the idiot at Autozone "those who can do. Those who can't; stand behind the parts counter".
I have a Gun/Gunsmithing shop and I can assure you WE DO NOT assume just because you're a "girl" you don't know anything.
BTW, my wife drives our PS as much as I do. She doesn't work on it but she has to occasionally "help".
On the down side: she absolutely CANNOT drive a manual trans. truck!

hell they treat me like i know nothing even though i am usually holding the bad part in my hand and i am dirty as all get out. then they show their real brillance when they hand me the incorrect part and swear up and down it will work. then i have to drive back and hand them a piece of my mind in a heated conversation resulting in a personal conversation with the manager. i live 45 mins from the nearest parts store so it is imperative i get it right the first time!
on a more related note... this is where i suggest my dodge buddies go to replace those stock track bars. they hold up much better and seem much tighter than stock. Thuren Fabrication
whats the difference betweeen stock and the 6637 air intake?
The stock filter is a big pile of donkey ****(period)
It's just a poor design that works okay for gas trucks, but not for diesels.
It lets in to much dirt!!!! I have yet to see a air box that is not broke as well.
Mine is really trashed.
6637 is a bitchen mod that I, if i had the money, would do on everything I own.
Laptop, lawn mower, push mower, chainsaw, generator, motorcycle, 4wheeler, stereo, guitar amp, firearms, vacuum cleaner, shop vac, table saw, drill press.
You get the point.
And I'm quite serious about putting filters on all of them.
Oh, leaf blower too.

i'm only in the beginning stages of doing work...i just learned how to change the oil on my honda 9 months ago lol. in theory i can drive a manual truck...i drive my truck and i know how to drive a stick, but my daddy's beamer is very patient with me
so do you think it will hurt anything to re-use the black foam around the air filter at least for a few days? also gonna have to let that other bolt just sit in the hole i guess- i tried, my dad tried. nothing going, it won't screw back in!
who all has pictures of replacing the stock filter with the 6637? i need like a picture tutorial kind of thing...could you also do a cold air intake with that? i've read those help with fuel economy.

I just realized you might not infact know what a track bar is.
If you look under the front of YOUR truck you will see that the front axle is SUSPENDED and LOCATED by LEAF SPRINGS. One is attatched to each frame rail at both ends and the AXLE is attatched at each end in the MIDDLE of the leaf springs.
If you have an F-250 that is pretty much it. If you have an F-350 it also has a track-bar, like your Sister's Dodge. It is the bar that runs almost parallel to the tie rod (which is what steers your front tires/wheels). One end is attatched to the axle and the other end is attatched to the crossmember under the engine.
NOW your SISTER'S Dodge has COIL springs in the front instead of leaf springs.
It also has FOUR control ARMS. Imagine YOU had four arms and you had all four of them in front of you holding an AXLE, that's exactly what the control ARMS of her Dodge do. There are two on each side, an upper and a lower, these arms work with each other to keep the axle from ROTATING as power is applied to it. If there was only one arm on each side the axle would rotate above or below it which obviously would be a bad thing.
Now the TRACK-BAR comes into play.
The F-350 doesn't actually NEED a TRACK-BAR however Ford wisely added one to keep the truck from wandering around the road a little bit, especially as the truck gets older and worn. The reason it doesn't NEED it is that leaf springs actually pretty much keep the axle from going SIDE-TO-SIDE because of their reletive ridgidness.
The CONTROL ARMS of the Dodge (or any other similar suspension) can not locate the AXLE very well SIDE-TO-SIDE that's why the TRACK-BAR is mounted to the frame/crossmember AND the axle. It basically holds onto the FRAME/CROSSMEMBER on one end for a solid "hold". IT keeps the axle from wandering SIDE-TO-SIDE by holding onto the AXLE with the other end.
This type of suspension is called a FIVE LINK as there are FIVE "LINKS" keeping everything together and working as desighned. The "links" are the 4- controll arms and 1- track-bar.
There are also 3-link and 4-link systems as well but lets stay out of that for now.
