Having moved to Missouri just over a year ago and smarting from the first Personal Property Tax bill I have ever received, I am wondering if my truck is licensed correctly. Does anybody know where the state of Misery hides the rules? I can't find it on their website and the clerk at the DMV told me that a 12k plate was good enough for my F350 with a 14k trailer. I think I need a 24k plate just want to make sure before I donate even more money to the state.
Rule of thumb is to always register enough for both truck and trailer. It shouldn't make any difference on the PPT, just the registration fee. A benefit, if you see it that way, is that at 24,000 you don't have to put two plates on, only one is required.
your plates should cover your truck and trailer. but as long as you are not dum about it DOT will not stop you. The rules are diff if you are for hire!
you can find all the info you need in a CDL study book that the DMV gives away free

Be careful if you tow across state lines some states require two tags no matter how your truck is registered.

that's hard top belive if your "home" state only give you one plate how can they make you get a second plate that does NOT excist??? in fact some states used to only issue 1 plate on car and trucks....
You can request a second plate, for a fee. A friend of mine whose truck is licensed at 24k in MO was in TX and was ticketed for not having a second plate. You have to comply with the law where you are, not where you're from.
I'm gonna call BS on that one, I would fight that until the bitter end, there is no way you can require a person to have a second plate when they are only given one.
As for the original question, get 24k plates and be done with it. The weight for your tag is truck & trailer combined.
Get used to that kind of law enforcement, as governments run low on money they will turn to traffic stops as a way of raising revenue, and they love out of state drivers as they don't have to worry about pissing off local voters.

I call foul on that one my father in law work in texas his truck 26,k plate (one) but he claims missouri as his home state and the cop do nothing to him... thats like the old missouri tint law... no tint on front windows... ILL law was black as you wanted it but MHP could not ticket the ILL people same principle here..
Call foul all you want, I saw the ticket. You have to bear in mind that cops get to choose which laws to enforce and when to enforce them. Most times they will allow violations based on how long you've been in the state but are not required to. Find a small town cop that the local city council uses as an atm and all bets are off.
Plenty of them are ready for your lawyer, they make sure that he is more expensive than just paying the fine, or taking whatever deal they have to offer, and the smaller the town the more likely they are to have a deal for you to keep things off the record......for a price.
I would pay more for a lawyer to make it go away just based on principle...That and my uncle is a lawyer, and would do it for free, also based on principle...
