I am new to these trucks, but I have always wanted to get a 1970's ford with a 460 and make it a long term project truck. It would be an offroad restoration truck. So it would be done nicely, but with big tires and would see offroad time at the sand dunes.
I like the short boxes more. I like the look and the shorter wheelbase would be good. Is it possible to convert the long box to short box? How difficult?
if theres a will theres a way! you need a short box frame! its almost impossible to shorten a frame! only one way and that is once you shorten the frame you have to full box the frame from front to back with thick c shaped steel beams, one piece c beams would be perfect, you want a piece of steel to full box the frame, it should be on piece! and make sure you are a good welder, and while your at it sand blast the entire frame then paint the frame and then prep with grinding for the welding, you will end up drilling holes into the c beam so you can spot weld it on then do some really nice beads and make sure you get really good penatration! you also could put some nice bolts through the frame and into the c beam, just to give it more strength, the frame is the back bone, and you can not just bead weld or clamp the frame together after you have notched the length out of the middle, i am lucky and have a stock short box 77 f150 4x4 frame under my truck, and it is mint! you can see it in my youtube video! i got it plus the axles and np205 transfer case for only 500 bucks Canadian! and the frame only had light surface rust on it! heres the link to it, YouTube - My 1977 Ford F-150 4x4 Restoration
and if ya want i can get measurements for you if you decide to cut the frame, i am sure a good metal man could mod the frame! best of luck and don't give up on getting a short box 4x4 they look really mean when there lifted with at least 4" like mine!
Its not all that big of a deal to do frame work like that, yes you must know welding very well and understand how to reinforce the split but it can be done, biggest thing would be making certain you keep everything square and you would want just the frame sitting there when you did this, or wherever you take it to be done will want the bare frame to work on, no bed or cab I mean. most would simply cut the rear and move everything forward if at all possible, that way no splice anywhere but pickups may not work very well that way, go for it! just be very sure about who does this mod as it is very important to be done right.
Welcome to FTE jimc, take your time and look, seems alot of people are starting to really sell them, so have patience and look, like this one BAD *** CLASSIC F-150!
